The Philippine Historical Association was formally invited by the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC) to a forum for selected journalists on the International Arbitral Tribunal Initial Decision on the Maritime Dispute last 5 November 2016 at Annabel’s Restaurant.
Supreme Court Assocate Justice Antonio Tirol Carpio gave some updates on the matter. He said the first round is promising since it initially agrees with the Philippine Position that the tribunal has jurisdiction over the dispute with China on parts of the West Philippine Sea. Xiao Chua, Public Relations Officer, officially represented the association and was able to ask Justice Carpio a few clarificatory questions.
Also present was Mr. Mel Velasco Velarde who invested on the original Murillo-Velarde Map, the oldest map of the Philippines showing both Panatag Shoal and Spratlys as part of colonial territory.
